Skipton Girls’ High School is a centre of academic excellence where young women are challenged to succeed at the very highest levels. Exploiting this creative talent and intellectual energy, the sixth form is an exciting and successful place to be. Our specialist status in engineering allows us to develop an environment which challenges gender stereotypes and contributes nationally to the pool of able young women entering the most demanding professions.

Our sixth form centre is housed in a lovely Edwardian house. There are teaching and study areas, computer suites, a bistro for relaxation and meeting friends and a base for careers and support staff. In the main school the recently upgraded learning resource centre provides a good book stock, access to the school Virtual Learning Environment, e-learning resources and a school wide network linked to the Internet. A laptop loan scheme means that sixth form students can get access to ICT when they need it.

Successful sixth form studies demand a professional and business approach, and our sixth form contributes hugely to the school, through involvement in family tutor groups, leading the Student Executive, in mentoring younger students, in organising clubs and societies for younger students and as excellent role models. There are strong links with higher education, and an impressive record of entry to the most challenging degree programmes, with a number of students proceeding each year to Oxford and Cambridge universities, and to engineering, medicine and law in top universities across the country. Exam grades are important to building a successful future (we’re always among the top schools nationally) but even more so is the personal confidence and self esteem that grows from the freedom to take responsibility, to be fearless, curious and enthusiastic - in short to be oneself.

Sixth form students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities open to them beyond their examined courses, and have the opportunity to have wider achievement recognised through the AQA Baccalaureate.
